Systemic Changes Through Legislation/Policy at the National Level
Require mandatory ADA compliance audits of construction projects built with federal dollar (i.e. stimulus monies). Passage of the ADA/ABA regulations by DOJ and immediate implementation. K-12 education needs to focus on the multitude of areas that are covered by the ADA: employment, areas of accommodation, etc. physical access, facilities, programs, web access, playgrounds, classroom acoustics, awareness programs for students, universal design for learning and more. Require architects to take a Universal Design course to maintain their licenses Get a large special interest groups to buy-in, instead of fighting, ADA/FAir Housing, IBC, etc. or get government agencies to create uniform code standards that all can share instead of fighting each other and blocking reforms. Develop greater clarity/uniformity for accessible design standards. The many different standards (federal vs. private) make it difficult for the designer. Utilize mediation for informal resolutions instead of litigation or no response from the Dept. of Justice. Provide formal interpretations for gray areas of the law. Provide more training to the agencies involved in implementing the ADA. |
