Public Awareness of the ADA Open for Comment until September 25th



Methods of Delivery

Utilize more web-based applications such asTwitter to disseminate ADA information. Establish an internet-based outreach program on ADA using social networking tools such as Twitter and Facebook.

Provide public awareness outreach that is relevant to the public. Use “everyday” language to explain the ADA rather than legal or government terminology.

Provide better and increased education regarding accessibility using electronic training including websites and podcasts.

Develop new promotional campaigns using multi-media and new technologies.

Create a federally funded advertising/public disability awareness campaign,similar to those used to combat drug use or promote literacy, to build awareness of the ADA.

Outreach Groups

Provide information and disability awareness education designed for elementary school children.

Accredited universities and colleges should be required to have 1 – 2 hours of education on the ADA and disability issues available through the curriculum.

Conduct more ADA training at Centers for Independent Living and establish peer training programs.

Content

Create public service announcements or commercials that dispel myths about the ADA. Also develop commercials with business partners who employ individuals with disabilities and provide accessible services. A possible slogan: “business is business, people are people”.

Educate the public regarding the ADA’s relevancy to all Americans, not just those who currently are disabled.
